Pomegranate: A Super Fruit That’s Super Good For You!
May 1, 2013
Anyone who has ever eaten the sweet, yet tart seeds of a pomegranate can attest to the delicious flavor hidden inside its rugged red exterior. However not everyone is privy to the numerous health benefits of the fruit. Here are a few reasons why you should build pomegranate into your daily diet or supplement regime:
Pomegranates are extremely high in Vitamin C. This fruit is an excellent choice for the cold and flu season to help your immune system fight off existing illness and also to keep others at bay.
Pomegranates are chock full of antioxidants. Our bodies undergo stress that can cause free radicals – compounds that, if left unchecked by antioxidants, can have a detrimental effect on our body by altering essential DNA and protein structure that are necessary for organs to function correctly. Pomegranates have almost 2-3 times the amount of antioxidants as red wine or green tea!
Pomegranates are a natural blood thinner. Just like ginger, fish oils, garlic, and vitamin E, pomegranates contain compounds that act to improve circulation by keeping the blood fluid and inhibiting red blood cells from sticking to each other.
Pomegranates are beneficial in the treatment and prevention of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is currently the leading cause of death in men. Certain compounds called phytochemicals in pomegranates not only act as antioxidants as stated above, but also some studies have shown that they can help slow the growth of prostate cancer and also may help in lowering PSA values.
Pomegranates help lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and the risk of strokes. The results are in! Studies are showing just how great pomegranates are for treating cardiovascular issues, including hypertension, high cholesterol, and risk for heart attacks.
Treat your body right with the addition of pomegranate into your diet. It’s as easy as drinking pomegranate juice, eating the seeds from the fruit during the fall months, or taking a supplement that has a concentrated amount of the beneficial compounds.
